How to Choose an Overbed Table

An overbed table provides a movable surface that can be positioned over a bed or beside a chair. It can hold meals, reading material or light personal items when used within the product’s instructions.

The most important question is whether the table physically fits around the bed, chair or recliner where it will be used.

How does an overbed table fit around a bed?

Most overbed tables have a base that rolls under the bed while the tabletop extends over the mattress. The base needs enough clearance underneath the bed frame.

Measure from the floor to the lowest part of the bed frame. Then compare that clearance with the height and shape of the table base.

A base that is too tall may not slide underneath far enough to position the tabletop comfortably.

What height range do you need?

Measure the height of the mattress surface and consider whether the person will be sitting upright, reclining or using the table from a chair.

The table’s adjustment range should allow the top to sit at a useful height without forcing the person to reach upward or lean forward.

If the person uses a thick support mattress, include that height in the measurement.

How large should the tabletop be?

A larger tabletop provides more working space but also takes up more room beside the bed. Think about what the person actually plans to place on it.

A surface for meals and a book may not need the same dimensions as a surface used for several daily items.

Check whether the table will block access to bed controls, rails or transfers.

What is the difference between a fixed and tilting top?

Some overbed tables remain flat. Others allow part or all of the surface to tilt for reading or another task.

If a tilting surface is important, check how it locks and whether there is an edge or lip designed to help keep suitable items from sliding.

Do not place liquids or unstable objects on a tilted surface unless the table is designed for that use.

How does the height adjustment work?

Adjustment mechanisms vary. Some use a lever or handle. Others use a different locking system.

The caregiver or user should be able to operate the adjustment without excessive force. After changing height, make sure the tabletop stays securely in position.

Do the wheels lock?

Some overbed tables have locking casters and others do not. Check the exact product.

Even with locks, an overbed table is generally not intended to be used as a mobility aid or a support for standing. Do not pull on it to stand unless the manufacturer specifically says it is designed for that purpose.

Can an overbed table work with a recliner?

Possibly, but the base design is important. Recliners often have frames or mechanisms close to the floor that can block a standard table base.

Measure under and around the recliner before ordering. Check how far the tabletop needs to extend to reach the user.

What should you know about weight limits?

Overbed tables have stated load limits. Use the surface for appropriate light items and follow the product instructions.

Do not sit on the table, lean heavily on it or use it to support body weight unless that use is specifically allowed.

What mistakes are common?

• Ordering without measuring clearance under the bed.
